Seismic Behavior of Welded Hospital Piping Systems

چکیده

This paper presents findings from shake table experiments on cable-braced and unbraced welded hospital piping systems. The research identifies the capacity characteristics of a hospital piping system with and without bracings as well as the system’s weak points. The system was tested to the ICBO AC156 acceptance criteria for nonstructural components. The input motion of 1g was amplified to almost 2.6g at the top of the braced and unbraced piping systems. There was no significant damage to the piping system due to the high displacements and accelerations. Two of the eleven braces failed at the highest input excitation, the 21⁄2” diameter vertical hanger rods failed during the unbraced tests, and a flanged connection began to leak during a pushover test. Preliminary results show that the braces limited the displacements, but they did not significantly reduce the accelerations of the system.

A Comparative Study of a Piping System Subjected to Earthquake Loads Using Finite Element Modeling and Analysis

This paper discusses the accuracy of a finite element model of a coupled piping system subjected to earthquake loads, as well as the differences in seismic behavior between coupled and welded piping system models. The test setup of a Victaulic coupled piping system tested at Lehigh University was modeled and analyzed with finite element methods. Two models were developed: (1) a welded pipe mode...

Experimental Evaluation of the Seismic Performance of Hospital Sprinkler Systems

This paper discusses the experimental set-up and procedures for the seismic testing and evaluation of a sprinkler system in hospital model. Concrete compression tests are ran to ensure compliance with ACI 355.2 anchor testing qualifications. Maximum shear strength of the anchor is found to include within the piping system model. Frame and piping system within the model is tested under input mot...

Evaluation of Performance Requirements for Seismic Design of Piping System

The cost of damage to the non-structural systems in critical facilities like nuclear power plants and hospitals can exceed 80% of the total cost of damage during an earthquake. The failure of nonstructural components, especially, piping systems led to leakage of water and subsequent shut-down of hospitals immediately after the event. Consequently, the evaluation of performance of these types of...

Acoustic Emission Testing of Seam-welded High Energy Piping Systems in Fossil Power Plants

The structural integrity of seam-welded fossil high-energy piping has remained a major safety and operations-maintenance issue for US utility companies. Several failures of seamwelded superheat and hot reheat piping segments have occurred since 1992, two of them catastrophic. Advanced methods of inspecting piping welds with ultrasonic testing (UT), such as time-of-flight diffraction and focused...

Piping Fragility Composed of Different Materials by Using OpenSees Software

A failure of the non-structural component can cause significant damages in critical facilities such as nuclear power plants and hospitals. Historically, it was reported that the damage from the leakage of sprinkler systems, resulted in the shutdown of hospitals for several weeks by the 1971 San Fernando and 1994 North Ridge earthquakes. In most cases, water leakages were observed at the cross j...
